FIVRA will validate phytoremediation solutions for the treatment and reuse of wastewater from Aragonese wineries

The FIVRA Operational Group will promote the development and validation of a phytoremediation system for the treatment of wastewater generated by wineries. The aim is to demonstrate the technical, environmental and economic feasibility of these nature-based solutions to support water reuse and improve the sustainability of the wine industry.

Nature-based solutions for water management

Effluent management is one of the main environmental challenges facing the winery sector. FIVRA will study the performance of phytoremediation systems capable of treating wastewater from winemaking processes using natural, low-energy technologies.

In addition to assessing the quality of the treated water, the project will analyse the possibilities for reusing this resource in different applications, contributing to more efficient water management in agro-industrial environments.

A pilot under real operating conditions

The pilot installation will be developed at the facilities of Cooperativa del Campo San Juan Bautista de Fuendejalón, where the system’s performance will be monitored under real operating conditions. The project will also involve Bodegas Luis Marín Pardos, enabling the replicability of the solution in other Aragonese wineries to be studied.

The work will include effluent characterisation, operational monitoring of the system, environmental and economic assessment of the results, and the development of a support tool for sizing future installations.

CIRCE coordinates the technical development of the project

The beneficiaries of the Operational Group are Cooperativa del Campo San Juan Bautista de Fuendejalón, Bodegas Luis Marín Pardos and CAMPAG, the organisation responsible for communication and knowledge transfer. CIRCE - Technology Centre participates as the project’s scientific and technical coordinator, leading the design and monitoring of the pilot system, the assessment of treated water reuse, and the associated environmental and economic analyses.

Innovation for sustainable water management in the wine sector

FIVRA is part of the Operational Groups of the European Innovation Partnership for Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability (EIP-Agri) and has been selected under the Government of Aragon’s GO 2026 call. The results will generate technical knowledge transferable to the Aragonese wine sector as a whole and facilitate the adoption of innovative solutions for sustainable water management.
