Calculating your carbon footprint: an essential requirement to work with large companies

Even if your company is not legally required to do so, if your client is a large company and is required, you become part of their environmental impact and therefore must also register your carbon footprint.
Not sure what the Royal Decree is about? We explain it here.
This new regulation has raised many questions: “It doesn’t affect me directly, but there are sections where I see myself reflected,” “I’m a supplier to a large company and they need to report the environmental impact of their suppliers, so do I need to register it?”, “How can I handle this process efficiently?”, and so on.
Many companies are starting to face this situation. They have never calculated their carbon footprint because it was not mandatory, or they don’t have the time or resources to manage this complex process, or they see no direct benefits.
But the situation has changed with the introduction of the Royal Decree, because if a large company is required to report its carbon footprint, it must also include emissions from its supply chain (known as Scope 3).
What does it mean that your client has to report Scope 3?
The new regulation requires large companies to:
- Calculate and publish their emissions (Scope 1 and 2).
- Develop a reduction plan.
- Although Scope 3 is currently voluntary, most companies are including it because it directly affects their market positioning, competitiveness, and access to financing or public contracts.
This means they need to know how much each supplier pollutes. It's no longer a regulatory issue for suppliers — it's a business issue.
