VITIRIEGO brings artificial intelligence to vineyard management to optimise water use
CIRCE coordinates the VITIRIEGO Operational Group to validate a new generation of artificial intelligence tools applied to vineyard irrigation. The project will further develop ViñAI, a technology created by the research centre that integrates climate data, sensor information, soil characteristics and agronomic variables to transform these inputs into recommendations that help optimise water use and improve decision-making at farm level.
A new generation of tools for water management
VITIRIEGO aims to advance more sustainable irrigation management through the combination of precision agriculture, field monitoring and artificial intelligence. The system will continuously analyse available information and transform it into practical recommendations to support decision-making by growers and technical advisers.
The tool will incorporate indicators related to soil conditions, vine water status, weather conditions and irrigation management practices to optimise water use and adapt to changing crop conditions.
Validation in Somontano vineyards
The project will be carried out in vineyard plots owned by Bodegas Sierra de Guara, located within the Somontano Protected Designation of Origin (PDO Somontano). Throughout the project, monitoring systems will be installed to collect information on soil moisture, water consumption, environmental conditions and the physiological response of the vines.
The results obtained will make it possible to compare the recommendations generated by VITIRIEGO with conventional management strategies and assess their impact on water use, vineyard performance and grape quality.
A consortium covering the entire value chain
The beneficiary members of the Operational Group are Bodegas Sierra de Guara, responsible for field validation; IG4 Andalucía, specialised in agronomic monitoring and sensing technologies; and Aragón Innovalimen, responsible for communication and knowledge transfer activities.
As non-beneficiary partners, CIRCE - Technology Centre participates as project coordinator and developer of the artificial intelligence system, while the PDO Somontano Regulatory Council will support the transfer of project results to the wider wine sector.
Collaborative innovation for the wine sector
VITIRIEGO is part of the European Innovation Partnership for Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability (EIP-AGRI) Operational Groups and has been selected under the GO 2026 call of the Government of Aragon. The project will contribute to the digitalisation of the wine sector through advanced decision-support tools designed to improve water-use efficiency and help vineyards adapt to increasing climate variability.abilidad climática.
